Hogan, with the referee down, gets the titanium mask and waffles both IRS and Dibiase with it. Some decent stuff in here but a really silly finish. Looks a lot like someone *cough Savage* punched him. Official reason is he injured himself in gym whilst others say it was a boating accident. Match 5: WWF Tag Team Championship: Money, Inc. and we get a recap of the incident on Raw that caused this match. Ramon wins with an inside cradle in what must be one of Backlund’s first clean losses in the WWF for decades. Bob Backlund has no crowd reaction at all and the fans cheer for Ramon. Terrible segment up next as Todd Pettingill interviews a Japanese snapper who can’t speak English… Overall: Not offensive but didn’t come close to living up to the billing it received ahead of time. Post-match silliness, another referee comes out and explains what went down but they both check under the ring and the second Doink, played by Steve ‘Skinner’ Keirn, is nowhere to be seen. Another blow to the head follows before the referee gets up and counts the fall. Crush locks in the head vice again, but the second Doink comes in and hits Crush with a loaded cast. Crush fires Doink back inside and delivers a spin kick. The finish comes after the ref takes a bump, and Doink goes out again trying to get under the ring. Doin has painted a statue off Julius Casear and we get a recap of what’s led us to this match.ĭoink sprays Crush with a flower, which pisses Crush off, so we start this off with a chase around the ring which ends up with Doink being ragdolled by the big Hawaiian. Gene catches up with Doink, he’s having a busy shift tonight. Overall: two for two for WrestleMania 9 with the second strong match of the night. Finish was a bit naff as Scott clearly misses the Frankensteiner but a big distance but still, a pretty solid tag team clash. Couple of really good moments here: Scott hurtling to outside after rope is pulled down looks brutal and Rick Steiner catching Samu coming off the top with a crossbody and turning into a powerslam. They work well together as well, largely, I believe, due to their fairly hard-hitting style. These are two pretty good and well experienced tag teams. WrestleMania 9 gets a pretty tight rep, largely because of how the show closes, but this is another good little match. It’s not only Jim Ross’ WWF PPV debut it’s also the debut of the word ‘slobberknocker’. ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund catches up with The Steiner Brothers and everything is a-ok. This had been fairly well hyped in the lead up to the show – it didn’t live up to the hype, that’s for sure. It certainly won’t make the list of Michaels’ best WrestleMania matches, that’s for sure. Post-match, Luna attacks Sherri but Tatanka makes the save. Tatanka hits the Samoan drop, but the ref calls for the DQ rather than counting. Really great finishing segment with a series of nearfalls until the really garbage finish when Shawn Michaels grabs the official and pulls him out of the ring. Some nice spots here, including Michaels hitting what would later become Sweet Chin Music after Tatanka comes off the top with a chop attempt. They have spent a fair bit of time working together and you can see that. Sherri now a face after Shawn put her in front of the mirror and she went through it. It’s always remarkable looking back as to how over Tatanka was. In the lead up to this, Tatanka secured a couple of pinfall wins – all non-title – over the champ to make us think that he could win the IC strap at Mania. Match 1: WWF Intercontinental Championship: Shawn Michaels © (w/ Luna Vachon) vs. Savage rides in on a sedan accompanied by vestal virgins while Heenan makes his way out, backwards on a camel. The opening ceremony sees Caesar and Cleopatra come out along with Savage and Heenan. Your hosts this year are Jim Ross, making his PPV debut in the WWF, along with ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan.Įveryone is wearing togas, as has been hyped for weeks on the show. Here we go, we’re at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. As part of our Raw Rewind series, we’ll also take in the PPVs and we’ve watched WrestleMania 9 – largely so you don’t have to.
